December Songs and Poems!
I chose these poems for a few reasons. One of the main things I was thinking about is that there is only 3 weeks to learn them, so I wanted to make sure they were bite sized and fun, with all the Exhibition hard work.
I chose Pick yourself up and the mindful breath one because the students are really learning to incorporate ways to calm and center themselves so that they can do all their great work (which you will see on Exhibition Night)! We are using the Frank Sanatra version to sing along with.
I also love Pick Yourself Up, not only for the message, but because it is in one of my all time favourite dance movies- here's a link to that scene where he looses and gets back her job! (He was pretending he didn't know how to dance to meet her, a dance instructor... when that goes ary, then he has to let out his secret...)
And here's THE scene!
I chose the other two poems for the winter theme and it's finally cold enough to make that make sense a little bit! ;) I love the Robert Frost poem- you may know it, but if not, please take a moment to read it aloud slowly. It makes me feel like I am there, in the woods, enjoying that calm moment with nature! There is a book someone made to illustrate it, which I will be reading next week.
The last one is more of Maurice Sendek's silly month poems. The kids love it.
This month the kids have been taking on showing more spelling and letter team sounds. It is so important that they are teaching themselves- they often remember information more strongly when it is from a peer! (Come into class to see all the marks to track the things they have showed others.)
Have a great month! Love, Jennifer
